Volodin Meets Modi as Russia-India Eye USD100B Trade Target
The trip is Volodin’s first foreign working visit since the newly elected State Duma took up its duties in late September. He heads the Russian delegation at the forum, which continues through Tuesday.
During the talks, Volodin lauded the state of ties between Moscow and New Delhi. “It is precisely this model of cooperation, based on respect and the absence of double standards, that Russia and India have developed under the leadership of the two countries’ leaders,” he said in a statement.
New Delhi is hosting the gathering because India holds the BRICS chairmanship this year.
The two governments characterize their relationship as a “special and privileged strategic partnership.” They have set a goal of lifting bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, up from almost $70 billion in 2024-25.
Energy is a major driver of that trade. Russia’s share of India’s crude oil imports hit a record 51% in July.
The visit follows a September meeting in New Delhi between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Modi, held on the eve of the BRICS summit, where the two leaders covered trade, energy and defense. Putin has also pointed to preparations under way for next year’s 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
BRICS began with five founding members: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The bloc has since grown to 11 countries.
