Pope Leo XIV Pleads for Yemen Peace After 9 Die at Jordan Church
Addressing crowds after the weekly Angelus prayer, the pontiff warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen, singling out the city of Taiz, where residents are struggling with scarce food, water and medical supplies, the Holy See’s official news service reported.
“I make a heartfelt appeal for hostilities to cease and for the Yemeni people and all the peoples of the region to be guaranteed a life of peace,” he said.
The war in Yemen dates to 2014, when the Houthis took Sanaa and several other provinces. A Saudi-led coalition stepped in during March 2015 to back the internationally recognized government. The Houthis now hold much of the north and west, while government forces and their allies control Aden and large parts of the south and east.
Leo then turned to Jordan, offering solidarity to the victims of Friday’s attack on worshippers at St. George’s Orthodox Church in Harmoud.
“I am close to that community and to the entire country, which stands out for its peaceful coexistence and respect among different religions,” he said.
Gunmen opened fire during a funeral on Oct. 23, killing nine people and wounding about 40 others.
“Let us continue to pray together for peace… Never before has it been so evident that wars, besides sowing death and destruction, impoverish and damage the world. May the Lord inspire choices of dialogue and peace,” the pope said.
