Bahrain Strips 69 of Citizenship for Sympathizing with Iran
Media said citizenship was revoked from those who had "expressed sympathy and praise for Iran's hostile and criminal acts."
The agency further confirmed that the total number affected, including relatives of those directly implicated, had reached 69 individuals to date.
The crackdown has judicial underpinnings as well. In March, Bahrain's High Criminal Court convened its first hearing for defendants accused of "promoting and glorifying Iranian hostile terrorist acts," media reported, without disclosing the number of those facing charges.
The citizenship revocations come in the wake of a joint US-Israeli military offensive launched against Iran on Feb. 28, which prompted Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional nations hosting American military assets. The campaign claimed more than 3,300 lives before Washington and Tehran declared a two-week ceasefire on April 8, brokered through Pakistani mediation.
Though the truce was originally set to lapse on April 22, US President Donald Trump announced an indefinite extension on April 21, acting on a request from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir.
