Russian Envoy Condemns US–Israeli Operation in Iran as ‘Unprecedented’

(MENAFN) A Russian envoy has sharply criticized a US-Israeli military operation targeting Iran, calling it a serious breach of international norms with wide-reaching implications for global nuclear governance, according to reports.

Andrey Belousov described the operation as “a flagrant and unprecedented act” during an interview with Russian news agency, warning that it could significantly damage the global non-proliferation framework.

He said the issue will be formally raised by the Russian delegation at the upcoming conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which is set to open in New York.

According to Belousov, military action conducted by a nuclear-armed state in cooperation with another country—while bypassing the United Nations Security Council—represents an unprecedented violation of international decision-making mechanisms, as stated by reports.

He further warned that the consequences could extend beyond the current crisis, potentially undermining both the NPT system and broader international relations.

Belousov also argued that strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have weakened the credibility of the International Atomic Energy Agency and its safeguards system, which he described as a core pillar of global nuclear oversight.

He added that, in Russia’s view, the actions also infringe on Iran’s “inalienable right” to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, further escalating concerns about the stability of international agreements governing nuclear activity.
