UK PM Denounce Washington Event Shooting as ‘Affront to Democracy’
(MENAFN) British leaders have strongly condemned a shooting incident that disrupted a major Washington gathering, describing it as an attack on democratic values after gunfire forced the evacuation of senior US officials, including President Donald Trump, according to reports.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “shocked by the scenes” and emphasized the importance of protecting democratic institutions and press freedom. He stated that “any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.” He also expressed relief that Trump, the first lady, and other attendees were not injured.
The incident took place on Saturday evening at the Washington Hilton Hotel during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. A suspect, identified by US media as a 31-year-old man, is currently in custody while authorities investigate his motives. Officials also confirmed that a Secret Service officer was shot during the incident but was protected by a bulletproof vest and is recovering.
Senior officials in the UK government also issued statements condemning the attack. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy called the incident “appalling,” adding that “political violence is an affront to democracy and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also expressed being “appalled” by the shooting and called for unity against political violence, stating that it “has no place in our democracies.”
The incident has prompted widespread international reaction amid ongoing investigations into the attack and its circumstances.
