India Raises Alarm with Iran Over Incident Involving Ships

(MENAFN) India has conveyed strong concern to Iran after reports of firing involving two vessels bound for Indian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, amid heightened tensions affecting maritime movement in the region.

According to diplomatic exchanges, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Iran’s ambassador to New Delhi, Mohammad Fathali, and expressed New Delhi’s unease over the incident involving ships carrying energy cargo. The meeting highlighted concerns that the vessels were reportedly prevented from transiting through the Strait under circumstances linked to Iranian Revolutionary Guard activity.

This marks the first reported disruption involving India-bound energy shipments in the Strait since the ceasefire announcement earlier in April. Iranian officials had previously stated that maritime movement remained unaffected, with Iran’s foreign minister asserting that transit remained open for commercial shipping.

During the meeting, Indian officials emphasized their position on the incident. As stated in the discussion, “The Foreign Secretary conveyed India’s deep concern at the shooting incident earlier today involving two Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz,” and urged Iranian authorities to ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of vessels. He also “urged the ambassador to convey India’s views to the authorities in Iran and resume at the earliest the process of facilitating India-bound ships across the Strait.”

Indian officials also noted that Iran had previously assisted in ensuring safe passage for commercial shipping and called for the restoration of normal transit conditions in the waterway.

Separately, it was clarified that the Iranian envoy was “called in” for discussions, not “summoned” as some reports had suggested.

The broader issue of maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz has also drawn international attention, with multiple countries discussing the importance of maintaining open navigation routes in a recent multinational forum involving dozens of states.
