Four Migrants Die While Trying to Cross English Channel
"Unfortunately, we are gathered again to report four deaths this morning," Pas-de-Calais Prefect François-Xavier Lauch told a broadcaster.
Authorities said at least 42 individuals had attempted to board the vessel, but powerful waves swept several passengers overboard. A number of people were subsequently pulled from the water, among them one person requiring urgent treatment for hypothermia.
The emergency response drew on an extensive network of personnel and assets — including firefighters, gendarmes, 10 state-mandated rescue operators, maritime patrols, a patrol vessel, a border police aircraft, and an army helicopter.
Officials issued a stark warning over the deadly risks associated with "taxi-boat" crossings, stressing that such attempts place migrants' lives in severe and immediate danger.
The tragedy arrives against a grim global backdrop. By the close of 2025, the United Nations' International Organization for Migration had recorded at least 7,667 deaths or disappearances along hazardous migration routes worldwide — a sobering figure that underscores the mounting human cost of irregular migration.
