Magnitude 4.4 Quake Jolts Russian Resort City of Sochi

(MENAFN) Two earthquakes struck near the popular Russian resort city of Sochi on Tuesday, with neither tremor causing casualties or structural damage, local authorities confirmed.

The first seismic event, measuring 4.4 in magnitude, was recorded in the Black Sea approximately 23 kilometers (14.3 miles) from the city, according to the Russian Academy of Sciences Unified Geophysical Service.

Sochi's mayor, Andrey Proshunin, moved quickly to reassure residents, stating there were no casualties or destruction following the initial tremor.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre independently verified the Russian Unified Geophysical Service's findings, while also reporting a second, slightly stronger quake that followed. That tremor registered a magnitude of 4.5 at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles), with its epicenter located 28 kilometers (17.3 miles) from Sochi.

The back-to-back quakes rattled one of Russia's most visited coastal destinations — a city that rose to global prominence as host of the 2014 Winter Olympics. No damage assessments or emergency responses have been reported as of this writing.
