Lebanon Premier Says Nation Will Not Be Dragged into New War
"It is not in our interest in any way, and we will not accept that Lebanon be drawn into a new adventure or war," Salam said during an iftar dinner held at the Grand Serail, the official seat of the Lebanese prime minister.
Speaking before guests, Salam urged that "reason, wisdom and patriotism will prevail, and that Lebanon's interest will rise above any other consideration" — remarks delivered as Israeli strikes on Lebanese territory continued despite an active ceasefire, according to a Lebanese news agency.
The prime minister also outlined domestic priorities, stating that his cabinet has laid the groundwork to confront entrenched crises — among them decades of impunity, chronic misappropriation of public funds, and a near-total absence of accountability that has hollowed out confidence in the state both at home and abroad.
Lebanon remains deeply scarred from the 2024 cross-border war between Israel and Hezbollah, and fears are mounting that an escalating U.S.-Iran confrontation could once again transform its soil into a proxy battleground.
Though a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel took effect on Nov. 27, 2024, Israeli forces have continued to launch intermittent strikes inside Lebanon, citing the elimination of Hezbollah "threats." Compounding tensions, Israeli troops remain stationed at five strategic positions along the Lebanese border — well past the Feb. 18, 2025 deadline set for their full withdrawal.
