Thailand’s Auto Production Climbs in January
Figures released by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) revealed that total vehicle production reached 118,386 units in January, marking a 10.53 percent increase from the same month a year ago.
The FTI said the expansion was also supported by a surge in pure electric vehicle (EV) production, as automakers shifted to domestic manufacturing after previously relying on imports under the government’s EV 3.5 incentive scheme.
Domestic demand posted a dramatic upswing. Vehicle sales in Thailand soared 53.77 percent year-on-year to 73,936 units in January, driven in part by expedited EV deliveries tied to the earlier incentive program, which concluded in 2025.
FTI Automotive Industry Club spokesperson Surapong Paisitpattanapong said the jump in local sales reflected the final phase of deliveries under the previous policy framework.
However, export performance painted a weaker picture. Outbound shipments of finished vehicles declined 6.28 percent from a year earlier to 58,405 units in January — the lowest monthly tally in 45 months, Surapong Paisitpattanapong told a news conference.
He attributed the downturn to the phase-out of certain fuel-powered passenger car models for overseas markets, alongside tougher import standards targeting vehicles without safety-assist systems and stricter carbon-emissions regulations.
