Clashes in Syria’s Latakia Leave Syrian Security Member Dead

(MENAFN) A member of Syria's Internal Security Forces was killed Tuesday in armed clashes with a pro-Assad militant group near the coastal city of Jableh in the Latakia countryside of northwestern Syria, local media reported.

Syrian television Al-Ikhbariyah, quoting a security source, reported that the confrontation with the "Saraya al-Jawad" group broke out in the course of an active security operation. Three group members, among them a commander, were "neutralized" during the engagement, the source said.

Syrian authorities designate "Saraya al-Jawad" as a terrorist militia due to its ties to the ousted regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, whose loyalist remnants have continued to foment security unrest across the country.

The clashes reflect the ongoing challenge facing Syria's new transitional administration, which has prioritized consolidating security control nationwide and dismantling networks linked to the former government.

Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia following the collapse of the Baath Party regime — which had governed the country since 1963. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was subsequently established in January 2025.
