Canadian Authorities Identify Suspect in British Columbia School Shooting

(MENAFN) Canadian authorities have identified the suspect in the recent school shooting in British Columbia as 18-year-old transgender teenager Jesse Van Rootselaar.

During a press briefing in Surrey, British Columbia Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald clarified earlier reports about the number of casualties. “I'd like to correct some information that was shared yesterday and to clarify that nine people in total are deceased as a result of this incident,” he said.

McDonald confirmed that a female victim previously reported dead is alive and among the two female victims airlifted to the hospital, both of whom remain in serious condition.

The suspect was identified as “an 18-year-old female by the name of Jesse van Rootselaar,” with McDonald noting, “We have a history of police attendance at the family residence. Some of those calls were related to mental health issues.” Authorities previously reported that the suspect was found dead inside the school from “a self-inflicted injury.”

Regarding the suspect’s gender identity, McDonald explained, “Jesse was born as a biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female, and identified as female, both socially and publicly.” He added that the suspect had “dropped out of school approximately four years ago and was not currently attending the school.”
