UK Issues Warning to Air India Following Dreamliner Safety Scare
According to the report, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) sent a letter to the airline on Tuesday seeking an explanation for how the aircraft was permitted to operate a flight to Bengaluru despite concerns over a potentially faulty switch.
The regulator warned that enforcement measures against Air India and its Boeing 787 fleet could follow if the carrier fails to provide a complete response within one week, the news agency said.
In a statement cited by the news agency, the CAA said the request for information was part of standard regulatory procedure. It has also asked the airline to deliver a detailed root cause analysis and a preventive action plan aimed at avoiding similar incidents across its Dreamliner fleet. The Tata group-backed carrier currently operates 33 Boeing 787 aircraft, including 26 787-8s and seven 787-9s.
Air India said an initial inspection of the switches identified no faults and that it would submit its response to the UK regulator accordingly.
Heightened scrutiny of the airline’s Dreamliners follows a deadly Air India Boeing 787-8 crash in Ahmedabad, in western India, last June that killed 260 people. The incident triggered concerns over a possible switch malfunction and prompted the airline to order inspections across its fleet.
Families of four passengers who died in the Ahmedabad crash have since filed a lawsuit against U.S. aerospace firms Boeing and Honeywell, alleging a design flaw that allowed the aircraft’s fuel supply to be cut off.
