Macron Issues Warning on Breaching Greenland’s Sovereignty
Macron delivered the warning during a Cabinet session, according to government spokesperson Maud Bregeon, noting that Washington has repeatedly voiced its ambition to acquire the autonomous Danish region.
“We do not underestimate the statements on Greenland. If the sovereignty of a European and allied country were affected, the cascading consequences would be unprecedented,” Bregeon quoted Macron as saying.
She emphasized that France is monitoring the matter “with the greatest attention” and pledged to act “in full solidarity with Denmark and its sovereignty.”
According to a broadcaster, Macron held talks last week with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, while his office confirmed that Paris is also consulting with Germany and the UK on “the situation and the various options."
Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot urged Washington to “stop blackmailing” Denmark over Greenland, stressing that he did not foresee a U.S. military intervention and that “nothing could justify it.”
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn U.S. interest due to its strategic position and abundant mineral wealth.
Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected offers to sell the island, reaffirming Danish authority over the territory.
On Tuesday, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced plans to establish a stronger and more permanent military presence in Greenland.
