UK records hundreds of earthquakes in 2025—BGS

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom experienced more than 300 earthquakes in 2025, according to a recent report from the British Geological Survey (BGS). By mid-December, seismologists had documented 309 quakes across the country.

Regions such as Perthshire and the western Highlands in Scotland, southern Wales, and Yorkshire and Lancashire in England were among the most seismically active areas. While many tremors were too minor to be noticed, the BGS’s network of 80 monitoring stations captured precise data on ground movement throughout the year.

The public contributed 1,320 reports of felt earthquakes, highlighting localized impacts. Perth and Kinross recorded the two strongest onshore quakes, both occurring near Loch Lyon on October 20, with magnitudes of 3.7 and 3.6 just hours apart.

Between October and December, 34 of the total 309 recorded tremors were concentrated in the Loch Lyon area, emphasizing it as a hotspot of seismic activity for the year.
