Shark attack kills woman, injures man in New South Wales
Police confirmed the woman died at the scene, while the man was airlifted to Newcastle Hospital in critical condition. Authorities credited a bystander who applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man’s leg before paramedics arrived, potentially saving his life. NSW Ambulance Superintendent Josh Smyth described the bystander’s actions as “heroic.”
The Department of Primary Industries said the shark involved was likely a large bull shark, one of the few species considered highly dangerous to humans. Bull sharks can inhabit both fresh and salt water and are ranked as the third deadliest shark species by the International Shark Attack File.
Kylies Beach has been closed, and authorities have deployed “smart” drumlines to capture, tag, and release any sharks in the area. Surrounding beaches will remain closed for 24 hours, with drone surveillance monitoring for additional risks.
Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce offered condolences to the victims’ families, urging the public to avoid the water and follow lifeguard instructions. This marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year, with the most recent occurring less than three months ago on Sydney’s northern beaches.
