UK Net Migration Figures Revised Downward by Twenty Percent
New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), published on Tuesday, follow a comprehensive revamp of the UK’s migration measurement system.
Officials explained that most of the adjustments result from incorporating labor records, which track the movements of British nationals more precisely than previous surveys conducted at ports and airports.
According to the new methodology, net migration for the year ending (YE) December 2024 has been revised down from a provisional figure of 431,000, released in May, to 345,000 — representing a reduction of roughly 20%.
The updated data also indicates that the UK’s recent migration peak was both larger and occurred earlier than earlier estimates suggested.
Net migration reached 944,000 in YE March 2023, compared with the previous estimate of 906,000 for YE June 2023.
Over the four-year span from YE December 2021 to YE December 2024, overall net migration has been revised downward by about 97,000, despite total immigration being increased by 316,000.
The primary factor behind this shift is a substantial rise in estimated emigration, which was adjusted upward by 413,000.
