Possible Dialogue Nears Between Trump, Maduro

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump indicated on Sunday that potential negotiations could take place with Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, even as strained relations and an expanding military presence persist in the Caribbean Sea.

Trump stated to journalists in West Palm Beach, Florida—just before departing on Air Force One for Washington, DC—that “We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we'll see how that turns out…They would like to talk.”

His comments emerged shortly after the decision to label the Venezuela-based Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), a designation he said would enable the US to pursue assets and infrastructure associated with Maduro’s administration, which he accuses of controlling the illicit network.

Regarding this step, Trump noted, “It allows us to do that, but we haven’t said we’re going to do that.”

He further mentioned that he had directed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with other top State Department officials, to brief Congress on Washington’s attempts to limit narcotics trafficking.

He instructed them: “Go to Congress and let them know we’re not letting drugs come through Mexico, we’re not letting them come through Venezuela,” while adding that “the only thing I don’t want them to do is leak information.”

Earlier in February, the US State Department had designated several Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, giving intelligence bodies expanded legal powers to undertake covert actions.

Meanwhile, the US military has persisted in launching operations against ships in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, which Trump and senior officials claim are involved in conveying drugs into the US.

He has likewise issued warnings of possible measures against Maduro.
