Anti-Government ‘Generation Z’ Protest Erupts in Mexico City

(MENAFN) Masked rioters confronted police outside the presidential palace in Mexico City during Saturday’s anti-government “Generation Z” demonstration.

Thousands of participants marched from the Angel of Independence monument to Constitution Square, assembling near the National Palace, which houses the president’s office.

The protest began peacefully, but a faction of masked rioters, identified by local outlets as Black Bloc, broke through security barricades, threw stones, and engaged in physical clashes with law enforcement.

Footage from the scene shows protesters striking officers, while police were also seen kicking a demonstrator on the ground.

The confrontations persisted for roughly an hour before authorities deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, a newspaper reported.

The demonstrators said they were rallying against corruption, abuse of authority, and impunity in violent crime cases.

Many chanted slogans criticizing the ruling left-wing Morena party.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the violent actions. “If people disagree, they should express their views through peaceful demonstration. Violence must never be used as a means of achieving change,” she stated.

Earlier, Sheinbaum had asserted that the protests were fueled by “bots and fake accounts on social media” orchestrated by “right-wing groups.”
