Kremlin says it wants early Putin-Trump meeting

(MENAFN) The Kremlin on Monday expressed interest in a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump “sooner rather than later.”

During a press briefing, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such a meeting would require thorough preparations and that Moscow hopes it will occur once conditions are in place. He added that it is currently difficult to predict when these conditions will be met.

"Although, of course, we are all interested in these conditions being fulfilled sooner rather than later," Peskov noted.

Peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv, mediated in part by Trump, have largely stalled, with both sides blaming each other for delays. The two leaders last met in August in Alaska, and a planned Budapest summit on the Russia-Ukraine conflict was canceled last month, with Trump calling it a “wasted meeting.”

On the topic of prisoner exchanges, Peskov said expert groups from both countries are cooperating. "There are indeed contacts at the expert level regarding prisoner exchanges. Discussions are ongoing, but I won't give any specifics right now," he said.

On Saturday, Ukraine’s National Defense and Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov said on Facebook that consultations in Türkiye and the UAE, mediated by partners, focused on resuming prisoner swaps, agreeing to activate the Istanbul arrangements for the release of 1,200 Ukrainians. Technical consultations will follow to finalize procedural and organizational details.

Russia and Ukraine previously held three rounds of peace talks in Istanbul — on May 16, June 2, and July 23 — leading to major prisoner swaps and draft memoranda outlining positions for a potential peace deal in the ongoing conflict that began in February 2022.
