Trump is open to have discussions with Maduro
Trump has previously accused Maduro of running “narcoterrorist” operations — a charge the Venezuelan president has rejected. Speaking in Florida on Sunday before flying back to Washington, Trump remarked, “We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we’ll see how that turns out,” adding that “They would like to talk.”
He again claimed that the Venezuelan government has facilitated drug trafficking into the United States and sent “hundreds of thousands” of violent offenders across the border. Trump argued that the State Department’s recent classification of Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organization gives Washington the legal basis to hit targets inside Venezuela, noting, “It allows us to do that, but we haven’t said we’re going to do that.”
Since September, the US has struck more than 20 suspected cartel vessels in Caribbean international waters and deployed a sizeable naval presence to the region, including the USS Gerald R. Ford. In August, Trump raised the reward for Maduro’s capture to $50 million.
Maduro has dismissed the drug trafficking accusations and cautioned Washington against launching “a crazy war.” Addressing supporters in Caracas, he declared, “No more endless wars. No more unjust wars. No more Libya. No more Afghanistan.”
Amid the increased US military activity, Maduro has ordered Venezuela’s armed forces to remain on high alert and has overseen a series of military exercises in preparation for potential escalation.
