Witkoff Expresses Optimism on Gaza Ceasefire
Witkoff said he is “hopeful” that a 60-day ceasefire agreement could be finalized by the end of the week, following meaningful progress achieved through proximity discussions.
During a Cabinet session with US President Donald Trump, Witkoff highlighted that the negotiations had made significant headway.
“We had four issues, and now we're down to one after two days of proximity talks,” he stated. He went on to say, “So, we are hopeful that by the end of this week, we will have an agreement that will bring us into a 60-day ceasefire.”
The envoy also noted that the proposed arrangement would include the release of 10 hostages who are alive, as well as the remains of nine others. Witkoff voiced optimism that “this will lead to a lasting peace in Gaza.”
President Trump characterized the situation in Gaza as a “tragedy” and shared that the issue would be the central topic in his meeting later that day with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He noted that he, Netanyahu, and “the other side,” in reference to Hamas, all wish to “get it solved.”
Earlier in the day, Netanyahu addressed reporters at Congress, asserting that Israel’s mission in Gaza remains incomplete.
“We have still to finish the job in Gaza, release all our hostages, eliminate and destroy Hamas’ military and governance capabilities,” he said.
Netanyahu emphasized the importance of securing a different future for Gaza, not only for Israel’s benefit but for global stability.
