CNSA reveals new images of Earth, moon

(MENAFN) The China National Space Administration (CNSA) revealed on Tuesday new images of Earth and the moon captured by the Tianwen-2 probe while in orbit.

According to CNSA, the probe’s narrow-field navigation sensor successfully took the photos, confirming the sensor’s excellent operational status.

The released pictures include a view of Earth taken when Tianwen-2 was about 590,000 kilometers from the planet, as well as a similar-distance image of the moon. After transmission to Earth, scientific teams processed and refined the images.

Currently, the Tianwen-2 probe has been orbiting for more than 33 days and is located over 12 million kilometers from Earth, maintaining good condition, the agency reported.

Launched on May 29, Tianwen-2 is China’s inaugural asteroid sample-return mission. Its objective is to deepen understanding of asteroid formation and evolution and the early solar system.

Over its planned decade-long journey, the mission intends to accomplish several tasks, including collecting samples from near-Earth asteroid 2016 HO3 and exploring main-belt comet 311P, which orbits beyond Mars.
